She works with people who notice that their bodies continue to react negatively to old experiences, even when they rationally know that the past is over.

When You Consciously “Know” It Is Safe, but Your Body Does Not Believe It

Your body and brain are speaking two different languages.

“I know it is over, but I cannot let it go, cannot resolve it. It keeps lingering, circling around in my head. My body feels restless and anxious.”

Henriëtte hears this often.

People who notice that their body continues to react negatively to old events are commonly described as “suffering from trauma.”
People who come to her have often already done quite a lot to process their trauma. They have read about it, talked about it. Sometimes they have followed cognitive therapy. They have gained insight into their triggers. And yet certain situations still evoke a strong physical reaction: a restless stomach, fear, panic, a racing heart, poor sleep, digestive problems, difficulty standing up for themselves and/or freezing during conflict.
Excessive alertness, sometimes even without any clear reason.

This is not weakness. It is a nervous system that is still living from an earlier assessment of safety. Often, this originated in childhood. The entire system reacts as if there is danger in the present.

A practical example:
Anne always reacts very strongly when her manager raises his voice. Just thinking about it gives Anne stomach pain and makes her feel restless.

In her childhood, Anne experienced unsafety: an aggressive father. Her mother was unable to protect her. As a child, you do not yet have language or context. As a result, you draw conclusions about yourself in an attempt to understand safety. As a child, you do not say: “My parent is emotionally unsafe.”

So, at the moment of the childhood trauma, you give meaning to what is happening. You form a conclusion, as an internal, subconscious process. In Anne’s case: “There is something wrong with me.” “My feelings are not allowed to exist.”

This conclusion later becomes an automatic pattern that directs the nervous system and behavior. In Anne’s case: “I do not show emotions.” “I have to be strong.” These subconscious beliefs arise from unsafety. They are not rational, not chosen, and not conscious. They arise out of necessity, in order to survive.

The conclusion is the original seed. The subconscious belief is the programmed version. Her body continues to react as if the old conclusion is still true.

We work with the conclusion to understand where it began. And we work with the subconscious belief to change the pattern. Because PSYCH-K® addresses precisely that subconscious layer.

Trauma Arises When Safety Disappears — and Continues to Exist as Long as Safety Is Absent

Trauma is often seen as an event. But it is not. Trauma is primarily a physiological response that could not be completed. Because safety was lost, the body remains stuck in fight, flight and/or freeze. This unfinished stress response to an event is stored as a sensation in the body, not as words.

The body remembers what the mind cannot process.

During trauma, the brain switches into survival mode. As a result, the nervous system moves into fight, flight and/or freeze. Trauma changes the brain. Trauma memories are implicit and remain stuck in the emotional, limbic brain. They are not stored in the cortex.
As a result, the memories become fragmented, non-linear, chaotic, distorted, and sensory-based.

Your body responds to your perception: how you experience the event. And old beliefs determine your “biology.” — Bruce Lipton

A negative judgment about ourselves and others causes mind and body to become rigid. Restoring contact between body and mind is crucial for optimal processing.

When the body relaxes and experiences safety, the brain can adopt new beliefs and process the trauma. Body and mind are then aligned.
So, as long as there is no safety, the trauma continues to exist.

Why Talking Is Not Always Enough to Process Trauma

Talking helps us understand what happened. But trauma is not in the story — trauma is in the body!

When an experience was too overwhelming to process, the nervous system switches into survival mode. The body: freezes, tenses, dissociates, and stores the experience as sensation, not as language, and that is exactly why talking alone is not enough.

1. Trauma Is Stored in the Body, Not in Words
During a traumatic experience, the part of the brain that regulates language and logic becomes less active. The body takes over.

What is stored in the cells is the state of the traumatic experience: through heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, reflexes, sensory impressions, and freezing. So it is not the story that is stored, but the state, through sensations.

That is why someone can say:
“I know I am safe”
… while the body reacts as if the danger is still present.

2. Talking Activates Thinking, Not the Nervous System
Talking takes place in the cortex — the rational brain. Trauma lives in the limbic, emotional system of the brain and in the autonomic nervous system.

So you cannot resolve trauma in a place where it does not reside.

Talking can even:

create distance from the feeling

bypass the body

reactivate the nervous system

retraumatize when it goes too fast

Peter Levine: “Trauma is a physiological process, not a psychological process.”

3. The Body Must First Experience Safety
Without physical safety, the brain cannot process. The nervous system must feel: I am here, I am safe

Only then can the body release the frozen energy. And then flow can return.

4. Beliefs Do Not Change as Long as the Body Is in Survival Mode
You can tell yourself a hundred times: “I am safe.”, “I am allowed to feel.”

But if your body is still living in an old state, the brain does not believe you.

The body always wins.

Bruce Lipton: “The moment you change your perception is the moment you rewrite the chemistry of your body.”

5. Healing Happens Through Experience, Not Through Analysis
Trauma heals when the body: relaxes, discharges, completes what was once impossible to complete, and builds new experiences of safety.

Not through:

endless talking

analyzing

explaining

understanding

Healing is a physical experience, not an intellectual insight.

The Turning Point: Experiencing Safety Again

During a PSYCH-K® balance, Henriëtte often sees the moment when someone not only understands that they are safe, but actually begins to experience it — to feel it. The intestines begin to release. An internal shift takes place. Breathing deepens. Muscle tension decreases, often followed by a deep sigh of relief. The face softens. The gaze becomes calmer. Everything becomes lighter. “A beautiful process to experience and to be allowed to guide,” says Henriëtte.

This is a shift in the nervous system. When a belief such as “I am not safe” is reprogrammed into “I am safe now,” the internal assessment of safety changes. And when safety shifts at the subconscious level, the body can truly relax. Clarity and relief arise, and often what could not previously be said is finally expressed.

Stored tension is given the opportunity to release. The system begins to flow again.

Trauma and the Body: Stored Tension Makes Sense

Many people become frustrated because of their reaction.
“Why do I react so intensely?”
“Why can’t I just let this go?”
But stored tension is not a sign of weakness. It is an intelligent protection mechanism. It once worked well, so the subconscious continues to use it. This is what it knows. This is what is in your “toolbox,” so to speak. The subconscious tries to prevent pain from being repeated.
When that mechanism is not updated, the system continues to overreact to situations that are objectively safe. Reprogramming does not mean denying the past, but updating the safety program.

For Those Who Recognize This

If you notice that your body reacts more strongly than your mind finds logical, you are not irrational. Your subconscious is doing exactly what it was once programmed to do: protect you.
The question is not why you react this way now. The question is whether the underlying safety conclusion still matches your current reality. And what changes when your body is allowed to experience that it is safe now.

A Personal Commitment

Henriëtte works with people who have sometimes spent years trying to process their trauma. From her own experience, she knows how frustrating it can be when understanding and knowing how trauma works does not lead to relaxation.

Beliefs are not only thoughts; they are bodily responses. The body performs the belief.

In her practice, PSYCH-K® offers an additional entry point: not only understanding what happened, but actually reprogramming subconscious, unhelpful beliefs into helpful and supportive beliefs. This reprogramming is done from a safe state, using a specific physical posture in which the brain and the subconscious are aligned. You then begin to experience it physically.

So that inner peace can arise.

Autonomy and Guidance

At De Werff, we train people in PSYCH-K® from one clear principle: sustainable change requires autonomy.
