We all have beliefs that guide us in our daily lives. Some of these beliefs are empowering, giving us strength, while others limit us and hold us back. These beliefs are often shaped by our upbringing, culture, experiences, and the people around us.
But what exactly are limiting and empowering beliefs? Why is it important to transform limiting beliefs into empowering ones? And how can we actually change our beliefs? This blog will explore these questions further.
What Are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are thoughts that keep us small and reinforce a negative self-image. Consider statements such as:
- I am not good enough.
- I don’t deserve success.
- I will never achieve…
No one wants to have these thoughts about themselves, yet chances are you catch yourself thinking them more often than you’d like. They can subconsciously influence your choices, self-confidence, and even your performance.
This isn’t surprising when you consider how many thoughts we have daily. It’s estimated that we think around 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. Can you recall all your thoughts from today? Probably not. Most of them occur in the subconscious. Neuroscientific research even suggests that a staggering 95% of our thoughts are subconscious.
Fortunately, we can transform limiting beliefs into empowering ones, such as:
- I am enough just as I am.
- I deserve success and happiness.
- With dedication and perseverance, I can achieve my goals.
Why Is It Important to Transform Limiting Beliefs?
A well-known psychological theory, the ironic process theory, demonstrates that the harder we try not to think about something, the more we end up thinking about it. A classic example of this is the phrase: Don’t think of a pink elephant! Chances are, you just pictured a pink elephant.
This principle also applies to limiting beliefs. The more you focus on what you can’t or don’t want to do, the stronger these thoughts become. That’s why shifting your attention to positive and empowering beliefs is much more effective.
Having a limiting belief is one thing, but the behavior that results from it is the bigger issue. Imagine constantly telling yourself: I’m not smart enough to do this. The likelihood is that you’ll avoid challenges simply because you believe you can’t handle them.
Even more importantly, limiting beliefs are often accompanied by negative emotions that directly affect our bodies. Our bodies continuously produce hormones and other substances—think of it as an internal pharmacy. If you have the limiting belief I don’t deserve love, it likely triggers negative emotions, which in turn stimulate the production of stress hormones. On the flip side, empowering beliefs can release helpful chemicals. So, which pharmacy would you rather activate?
That’s why recognizing and shifting these limiting beliefs to empowering ones is crucial. For example, replacing I’m not smart enough to do this with I am capable and can learn this! won’t magically grant you the skills overnight, but it will help you activate the right internal pharmacy and enables you to take the necessary steps toward your goal. Additionally, it builds self-confidence and opens doors to new opportunities and growth.
How Can We Change Limiting Beliefs?
We can transform limiting beliefs into empowering ones through a combination of awareness and active reprogramming of our thoughts.
- Identify the limiting belief – e.g., I am not good enough.
- Formulate an empowering belief – e.g., I am enough just as I am.
