What is Stress, and How Can You Learn to Recognize It?

1 February 2025

Stress

During my years as a psychologist and PSYCH-K® instructor, I’ve noticed that many people don’t always consciously recognize when they’re under stress. Stress is often only acknowledged when the consequences become severe—think of complete exhaustion, where someone literally cannot get out of bed. However, there are numerous subtle signals that indicate you’re experiencing too much stress well before reaching that point.

It’s these mild, less noticeable forms of stress that we often ignore but are crucial to recognize in time. By taking early signs seriously, you can prevent stress from accumulating and worsening over time.

A fitting metaphor is a bucket that gradually fills drop by drop. Someone who can no longer get out of bed didn’t reach that point overnight—it’s the result of a bucket that has been filling over an extended period. Be aware of those “first drops.” Empty the bucket in time to avoid it overflowing.

In this blog, we’ll explain what stress is, how to recognize it, and provide concrete examples of mild stress situations. We’ll also discuss how PSYCH-K® can help resolve stress.

What is Stress?

Stress is the body’s response to a situation perceived as threatening or challenging. It activates the “fight, flight, or freeze” mechanism. The body releases stress hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. These increase your heart rate and blood pressure and free up energy to prepare you for action.

In acute stress situations, these hormones can be beneficial. For example, when you need to perform under pressure, stress can help you prepare better. The same applies to moments like sports or reacting quickly to unexpected events, such as a sudden challenge or an encounter with a dangerous animal. These physiological changes prepare you to respond rapidly to a threat or challenge.

However, when these hormones are produced too frequently or for too long, they can cause unpleasant symptoms, both physical and emotional—think muscle tension, anxiety, and headaches.

Managing stress involves identifying stressors and developing strategies to cope with them.

Learning to Recognize Stress

If you’re afraid of using public transport, avoid highways, or are homebound with burnout or depression, chances are you’ve already missed several signs of stress. Recognize, identify, and address stress in its early stages to prevent more serious consequences. Pay attention to the first signs of stress so you can intervene in time.

Examples of Mild Stress Signals

  • Something unpleasant happens at work ➔ You start snacking or drinking.
  • You don’t get along with a colleague ➔ You begin avoiding them.
  • At the schoolyard while picking up your kids ➔ You feel uncomfortable and insecure.
  • Your children need to go to school, but your daughter refuses to wear her winter coat ➔ You get irritated and threaten no dessert that evening.
  • You come home from work, start cooking, and the kids start arguing ➔ You feel tense, get irritable, and notice you’re raising your voice more quickly.
  • Your inbox is overflowing with emails ➔ You feel overwhelmed and procrastinate replying.
  • You’re stuck in traffic ➔ You clench your jaw.

Examples of Physical and Emotional Stress Signals

Physical signals:
Headaches, heart palpitations, stomach issues, back and neck pain, high blood pressure, muscle tension, fatigue.

Emotional signals:
Difficulty concentrating, overthinking, forgetfulness, eating too much or too little, poor sleep.

How Can PSYCH-K® Help Resolve Stress?

Many people don’t fully understand what stress is. As I mentioned earlier, recognizing stress is the first step. Hopefully, the examples I’ve provided help you identify the stress factors in your life. But what should you do about them?

PSYCH-K® is the tool I use in my practice and teach participants during workshops so they can apply it themselves—without needing a therapist or coach. With this tool, you can effectively address the first signs of stress.

In PSYCH-K®, we use a specific protocol that helps break through stress patterns. This protocol helps you reprogram your responses, allowing you to react more calmly and consciously to stressful situations. This way, you can better manage daily triggers and prevent stress from building up.

Conclusion

Stress is a natural reaction of the body, helping you face challenges. But when stress becomes frequent or prolonged, it can lead to physical and emotional complaints. By recognizing the early signs of stress, such as overthinking, fatigue, or physical tension, you can prevent these complaints from worsening.

PSYCH-K® offers practical tools to tackle stress factors and regain balance. Take an active approach to recognizing and resolving stress. It’s the key to a healthier and happier life.
